Oh It Seems Like All My Life
Professor Porter was a very studious, rather oblivious man. He spent much of his life writing research papers for scientific magazines and instructing others on the various wonders of the world. He couldn’t wait to start a family of his own so he could pass on his knowledge to his children. But there was very little time for starting a family when there was so much out there to discover! It came as quite a shock to the professor when he realized that he had reached the age of forty and had yet to settle down and start the family he so dreamed of. He tried going about it the usual way, finding a woman, marrying her and settling down, but that never worked for him. The poor professor was just far too interested in science and far too oblivious to realize that women could be very jealous creatures, even of books. He tried to make an effort, really he did, but a leopard can’t change his spots. Disheartened as the years went by, the professor was sure his dream would never see fulfillment. Then he overheard a colleague mention adoption, and that was how the professor ended up with a daughter.

He adopted young Jane from the Kramer Orphanage when she was 14 months old. The two of them were so alike it was as though Jane was meant to be his daughter. She was the perfect audience for him, and he delighted in telling her tales of the world outside of their apartment. But while he could entertain her for hours and hours, there were aspects of childrearing that the professor was just not capable of, such as remembering meals and keeping important appointments. When the social worker on his case threatened to intervene because of this, the professor hired a housekeeper named Lynne Anders and life settled into a happy routine for Jane. Lynne cared for her as a mother would, and the professor expanded her mind and fulfilled her need for knowledge. She was a very content, very intelligent little girl.

Jane was never told she was adopted, and she never questioned it. She and the professor were so alike in mind and in manner, it never crossed her mind that she was not related to him. Even Lynne would sometimes wonder how two such similar people were in no way related. As Jane grew and became more independent, Lynne found herself becoming less and less needed, and when Jane turned thirteen, she retired. It was a sad day for Jane, but Lynne was still in the neighborhood, so Jane could still visit. She visited Lynne every afternoon after school, and then returned home to her dad. Without Lynne, Jane settled into the role of her father’s caretaker very easily. It was a very natural progression and it strengthened their already strong bond.

When Jane turned sixteen, Lynne was diagnosed with cancer, and was very quickly taken by the disease. It all happened so fast that Jane barely had time to react. The loss of the only mother figure she ever knew left Jane in a deep depression for a few months, but Jane soldiered on. There was so much to do and see, and her father needed her. Jane didn’t have the time or the personality to settle into depression for very long.

Now Jane was twenty years old, studying biology at Balamb University and helping her father write his paper on a local species of wildflower that has been shown to help treat pain. She used her time working in the library to do research for him and for her own projects. When she wasn’t in class or working, Jane could still be found in random places, sketching various flowers or creatures that roamed through Twilight City. Life was perfect.
